What is Shiatsu Massage and How It Works
Shiatsu is the modern Japanese system of pressure-based therapeutic bodywork that evolved from traditional Japanese Anma massage (developed in the 7th century from Chinese Tuina) and was formally systematized in the 20th century. The modern form was developed by two key figures — Tokujiro Namikoshi in 1925, who founded the Japan Shiatsu College (the first Shiatsu school) and established Shiatsu as a recognized therapy, and Shizuto Masunaga in the 1970s, who developed Zen Shiatsu by integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian theory more deeply into practice.
In 1955, Shiatsu was officially recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as a distinct therapeutic practice — making it the only massage form with formal government licensing requirement in Japan. Today, Shiatsu is practiced worldwide and recognized by the World Health Organization as traditional medicine.
The Foundation — Ki Energy and Meridians
Shiatsu is rooted in the Traditional Chinese Medicine concept of Ki (気) — vital life energy that flows through the body via 12 primary meridian channels and 8 extraordinary vessels. Each meridian corresponds to specific organs and body functions:
Lung Meridian — Respiratory system, immune function, grief processing Large Intestine Meridian — Elimination, letting go, immunity Stomach Meridian — Digestion, worry, nourishment Spleen Meridian — Digestion, blood, thought, immunity Heart Meridian — Heart, mind, joy, sleep Small Intestine Meridian — Absorption, discernment Bladder Meridian — Water, fear, willpower (longest meridian, runs entire back) Kidney Meridian — Vitality, reproduction, willpower, water balance Heart Protector (Pericardium) Meridian — Heart protection, emotional balance Triple Heater Meridian — Energy distribution, communication Gall Bladder Meridian — Decision-making, courage Liver Meridian — Anger, planning, blood storage
When Ki flows freely through meridians, body and mind function optimally. When Ki becomes blocked, deficient, or excessive in certain meridians, physical symptoms and emotional imbalances develop. Shiatsu identifies and corrects these imbalances through systematic pressure work.
The Tools of Shiatsu — Hands, Fingers, Elbows, and More
Unlike Swedish massage which uses primarily palms and fingers with oil, Shiatsu therapists use multiple body parts to apply pressure:
Thumbs — Primary tool for precise point work on specific tsubo (pressure points) Fingers (Index/Middle) — Detailed work in sensitive areas Palms — Broader pressure across large muscle groups Elbows — Deep pressure on larger muscles (back, glutes, thighs) Knees — Sustained pressure on hamstrings, calves, glutes Feet — Pressure on back and legs in advanced techniques (Barefoot Shiatsu) Body weight — Therapist uses their body weight rather than muscular force, allowing deep pressure without therapist fatigue
The Core Techniques of Shiatsu
- Static Pressure (Atsu) — Sustained perpendicular pressure on specific tsubo (pressure points) for 3-10 seconds. The foundational Shiatsu technique. Used on hundreds of points throughout the body.
- Kneading Pressure — Rolling and kneading pressure on muscle groups using palms or knuckles. Used for muscle tension release.
- Stretching and Joint Mobilization — Assisted stretches and joint rotations that elongate meridians and improve range of motion. Often resembles passive yoga postures performed by the therapist on you.
- Rocking and Vibration — Rhythmic rocking of body parts to release tension and stimulate Ki flow. Often used at session beginning to assess client’s state.
- Diagonal Stretching — Therapist uses two hands or body parts to create stretching tension across body sections, releasing meridian tension.
The Two Main Schools of Shiatsu
Namikoshi Style (Western/Medical Shiatsu) — Founded by Tokujiro Namikoshi. Focuses on Western anatomy and physiology, applies systematic pressure to specific anatomical points (not necessarily TCM meridian-based). More clinical and medical in approach. Most widespread style globally.
Masunaga Style (Zen Shiatsu) — Founded by Shizuto Masunaga. Integrates Traditional Chinese Medicine theory deeply, works with meridian channels, includes mother-hand/working-hand technique. More intuitive and energetic approach. Particularly popular in Europe and among holistic practitioners.
Our therapists are trained in both styles and adapt approach based on your needs and preferences.
How Shiatsu Affects Your Body
Shiatsu produces multiple therapeutic effects simultaneously:
- Parasympathetic Nervous System Activation — Deep relaxation response, cortisol reduction, anxiety relief
- Improved Circulation — Both blood and lymphatic flow improvement throughout meridian pathways
- Muscle Tension Release — Sustained pressure releases chronic muscle tension and trigger points
- Improved Energy Flow (Ki) — Traditional framework for unblocking energy stagnation
- Hormonal Balance Support — Endocrine system support through corresponding meridian work
- Digestive Improvement — Abdominal work supports digestive function
- Emotional Release — Specific meridians carry emotional associations; their treatment supports emotional balance
- Improved Sleep Quality — Profound nervous system regulation supports sleep

How Shiatsu Differs from Other Massage Types
Shiatsu is fundamentally different from oil-based Western massage. Here is how it compares to other major treatments.
Shiatsu vs Swedish Massage
Swedish uses oil-based gliding strokes on undressed body for muscle relaxation. Shiatsu uses pressure-based work on fully clothed body following meridian channels for energy and tension balance. Completely different practices. Choose Swedish for oil-based muscle relaxation. Choose Shiatsu for pressure-based fully-clothed therapeutic work.
Shiatsu vs Thai Massage
Both performed fully clothed without oil — but Thai uses extensive stretching and acupressure on sen energy lines (similar but distinct from meridians), while Shiatsu uses more sustained pressure work with less acrobatic stretching. Different traditions (Japanese vs Thai), different emphases. Choose Thai for stretching emphasis. Choose Shiatsu for sustained pressure emphasis.
Shiatsu vs Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue uses oil-based firm pressure on deep muscle layers. Shiatsu uses sustained pressure on specific points fully clothed. Both can address chronic tension but through different approaches. Choose Deep Tissue for oil-based deep muscle compression. Choose Shiatsu for point-based pressure work with energy framework.
Shiatsu vs Acupressure
Both use pressure points based on TCM theory. Shiatsu is the Japanese systematized form with specific style schools (Namikoshi, Masunaga). Acupressure is the broader TCM-based pressure point therapy without specific style designation. Related but Shiatsu is more formalized as therapeutic system.
Shiatsu vs Acupuncture
Both work on TCM meridians and pressure points. Acupuncture uses needles. Shiatsu uses pressure only. Related practices but Acupuncture requires medical licensing in UAE while Shiatsu does not. Both can address similar conditions through different methods.
Shiatsu vs Reflexology
Reflexology works on feet, hands, and ears with reflex zone mapping. Shiatsu works on the entire body following meridian channels. Different therapeutic frameworks though both use pressure-based work. Choose Reflexology for foot-zone work. Choose Shiatsu for whole-body meridian work.
Shiatsu vs Ayurvedic Massage
Ayurvedic is Indian traditional medicine using herbal oils and marma point work on undressed body. Shiatsu is Japanese pressure work on clothed body using meridian theory. Different traditional medicine systems (Indian vs Japanese/Chinese). Choose Ayurvedic for Indian medicine. Choose Shiatsu for Japanese/Chinese medicine.
Shiatsu vs Cupping Therapy
Cupping uses vacuum suction on the body. Shiatsu uses pressure. Different mechanisms. Some practitioners combine both. Choose Cupping for fascial decompression. Choose Shiatsu for pressure-based point therapy.
Shiatsu vs Sports Massage
Sports Massage uses pressure-based oil work for athletic recovery. Shiatsu uses pressure-based no-oil work on energy framework. Some athletes use Shiatsu as complementary therapy alongside Sports Massage. Choose Sports Massage for athletic recovery focus. Choose Shiatsu for whole-body energy and tension balance.
Shiatsu vs Tuina
Both rooted in Chinese medicine. Tuina is the Chinese parent practice (predates Shiatsu by centuries). Shiatsu is the Japanese refinement with modern formalization. Tuina remains more vigorous and traditional Chinese; Shiatsu more systematic and meditative Japanese. Both excellent pressure-based therapies.
Benefits of Shiatsu Massage (Science-Backed)
Shiatsu is increasingly studied in modern medical research with documented benefits for several specific applications. Below is what regular sessions deliver — with data from the Japan Shiatsu College, British Journal of Pain, Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), and Japanese Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare research.
Significant Reduction in Chronic Stress and Anxiety
Multiple clinical studies confirm Shiatsu produces measurable stress and anxiety reduction. Particularly effective for chronic stress-related conditions due to the deep parasympathetic activation and sustained pressure approach. Studies show 30-45% anxiety symptom reduction with consistent Shiatsu treatment over 6-8 weeks.
Improved Sleep Quality and Reduced Insomnia
Shiatsu is particularly effective for stress-related insomnia and sleep disorders. The deep relaxation response, Heart meridian work, and Kidney meridian work (governing rest and restoration) combine to produce significant sleep improvement. Studies show 35-50% improvement in chronic insomnia symptoms.
Effective for Chronic Lower Back Pain
The Bladder meridian runs the entire length of the spine and is the longest meridian in the body. Sustained Shiatsu pressure along the Bladder meridian effectively addresses chronic lower back pain. Studies show 40-55% pain reduction with weekly Shiatsu over 6-8 weeks for chronic lower back pain.
Headache and Migraine Relief
Studies show Shiatsu effectively reduces tension headache frequency and severity. The combination of neck/shoulder release and Gallbladder meridian work addresses common headache triggers. Particularly effective for stress-related and cervicogenic headaches.
Digestive System Support
Stomach and Spleen meridian work (TCM digestive system) supports digestive function. Studies show benefits for IBS, chronic constipation, indigestion, and bloating. Particularly effective when combined with TCM dietary recommendations.
Hormonal Balance Support
The Kidney meridian (TCM “essence” — reproductive and developmental energy) and Spleen meridian work support hormonal balance. Studies show benefit for PMS, menopause symptoms, and stress-related hormonal disruption. Always complementary to medical treatment.
Improved Energy and Reduced Fatigue
For chronic fatigue, low energy, or post-illness recovery, Shiatsu’s energy framework directly addresses these concerns. The Kidney meridian (TCM “vitality”) work supports energy restoration. Many clients report sustained energy improvement after Shiatsu sessions.
Cancer Supportive Care
Shiatsu has been studied as supportive care for cancer patients with positive results for cancer-related fatigue, anxiety, and quality of life. Always as supportive care alongside conventional oncology treatment, never as primary treatment.
Reduced Sciatica and Hip Pain
The Bladder and Gallbladder meridians run through the hip/glute region. Sustained Shiatsu work in this area effectively addresses sciatica and hip-related pain. Often combined with stretching work.
Improved Range of Motion and Flexibility
The stretching and joint mobilization components of Shiatsu improve flexibility and range of motion. Particularly beneficial for clients with chronic stiffness, sedentary lifestyle, or working postures.
Emotional Balance and Mental Health Support
Each meridian carries traditional emotional associations (Lung-grief, Liver-anger, Spleen-worry, etc.). Shiatsu addresses emotional imbalances through corresponding meridian work. Provides supportive complementary care for anxiety, depression, and emotional processing. Not replacement for mental health treatment when needed.
Recommended Frequency
For chronic conditions — Weekly for 6-8 weeks, then bi-weekly maintenance For stress/insomnia — Weekly for 4-6 weeks during high-stress periods For wellness maintenance — Monthly For office workers — Bi-weekly during demanding work periods For cancer supportive care — Weekly, coordinated with oncology team For first-time clients — Monthly to start, adjust based on response

People Also Ask About Shiatsu Massage Dubai
What is Shiatsu Massage?
Shiatsu is the modern Japanese system of pressure-based therapeutic bodywork that combines Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian theory with Japanese Anma massage and modern physiology. Uses systematic finger, thumb, palm, elbow, knee, and foot pressure on specific points along the body’s energy meridians. Performed fully clothed on a futon mat or massage table. The Japanese word Shiatsu (指圧) literally means “finger pressure.”
How is Shiatsu different from regular massage?
Major differences:
- Clothing — Shiatsu is fully clothed; regular massage is undressed
- Oil — Shiatsu uses no oil; regular massage uses oil
- Surface — Shiatsu is traditionally on a futon mat; regular massage on a table
- Technique — Shiatsu uses sustained pressure on points; regular massage uses gliding strokes
- Framework — Shiatsu uses meridian theory; regular massage uses muscle anatomy
- Tools — Shiatsu uses thumbs, elbows, knees, feet; regular massage primarily hands
Will I feel pain during Shiatsu?
Generally not — but sustained pressure on tight or imbalanced points can feel intense. Pain levels are entirely controllable through therapist communication. Most clients describe Shiatsu as deeply relaxing rather than painful. Communicate your comfort level throughout the session.
Do I really stay fully clothed during Shiatsu?
Yes — completely. Authentic Shiatsu is performed with you fully dressed. We recommend loose comfortable clothing (we can provide cotton Shiatsu attire if needed). No undressing, no draping, no oils. This is core to authentic Shiatsu practice and often appreciated by clients preferring full-coverage therapy.
What should I wear during Shiatsu?
Recommended attire:
- Loose cotton or athletic clothing
- Long-sleeve top and pants (not shorts/tank top — allows access to all meridian areas)
- No belts, no jewelry, no watches
- Comfortable for stretching positions
We can provide cotton Shiatsu attire if you don’t have appropriate clothing.
Is Shiatsu performed on a table or the floor?
Traditional Shiatsu is performed on a futon mat on the floor. This allows the therapist to use body weight effectively and reach all body positions for stretching. We can also use a low massage table if you prefer or have mobility considerations. Both options work effectively.
What are meridians?
Meridians are the energy channels through which Ki (vital life energy) flows in the body, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory adopted by Shiatsu. There are 12 primary meridian channels (corresponding to specific organs) and 8 extraordinary vessels. When Ki flows freely through meridians, body and mind function optimally. When Ki becomes blocked or imbalanced, symptoms develop.
What are tsubo (pressure points)?
Tsubo (壷) are specific pressure points along meridian channels — equivalent to acupuncture points in Chinese medicine. There are hundreds of tsubo throughout the body. Shiatsu therapists apply sustained pressure to relevant tsubo to address symptoms and restore balance.
Will Shiatsu help my back pain?
Yes — particularly effective for chronic lower back pain. The Bladder meridian runs the entire length of the spine and is the longest meridian in the body. Sustained Shiatsu pressure along this meridian effectively addresses chronic lower back pain. Studies show 40-55% pain reduction with weekly Shiatsu over 6-8 weeks for chronic lower back pain.
Can Shiatsu help with insomnia?
Yes — Shiatsu is particularly effective for stress-related insomnia. The Heart meridian work (governing sleep in TCM theory), Kidney meridian work (restoration), and deep parasympathetic activation produce significant sleep improvement. Studies show 35-50% improvement in chronic insomnia symptoms. Schedule sessions in evening for best sleep benefit.
Will Shiatsu make me sore the next day?
Mild soreness is possible — particularly after first sessions or work on chronically tense areas. Some clients describe it as “good soreness” indicating tissue release. Severe pain is not normal — communicate any concerns during sessions. Most clients feel deeply relaxed and refreshed afterward.
Is Shiatsu safe during pregnancy?
Yes — only by prenatal-certified Shiatsu therapists who know contraindicated points. Certain specific points on the legs (Spleen 6), hands (Large Intestine 4), and abdomen must be avoided during pregnancy. Our prenatal-certified therapists know these contraindications. Inform any therapist of pregnancy before booking.
What is the difference between Namikoshi and Zen Shiatsu?
Namikoshi (Western/Medical Shiatsu) — Founded by Tokujiro Namikoshi (1925). Focuses on Western anatomy and physiology. Systematic pressure to specific anatomical points. More clinical approach. Most widespread style globally.
Masunaga (Zen Shiatsu) — Founded by Shizuto Masunaga (1970s). Integrates TCM theory deeply. Works with meridian channels. Mother-hand/working-hand technique. More intuitive and energetic approach. Particularly popular in Europe.
Both are authentic Shiatsu — different emphases. Our therapists are trained in both.
Can I have Shiatsu if I have medical conditions?
Generally yes — but inform your therapist of all medical conditions. Some conditions require modified protocols:
- Pregnancy — Prenatal-certified therapist required
- Active cancer — Coordinated with oncology team
- Recent surgery — Wait appropriate healing time
- Severe heart conditions — May require doctor clearance
- Active infections or skin conditions — Reschedule
- Severe diabetes — Inform therapist for pressure adjustments
How is Shiatsu different from Acupuncture?
Both work on TCM meridians and pressure points. Acupuncture uses thin needles to stimulate energy points. Shiatsu uses pressure only — no needles. Both can address similar conditions through different methods. Acupuncture requires medical licensing in UAE while Shiatsu does not.
How often should I have Shiatsu?
Chronic conditions — Weekly for 6-8 weeks, then bi-weekly maintenance Acute stress/insomnia — Weekly for 4-6 weeks General wellness — Monthly maintenance Office workers — Bi-weekly during demanding periods Cancer supportive care — Weekly, coordinated with oncology
Should I eat before a Shiatsu session?
Avoid heavy meals 2-3 hours before. Light snack 1 hour before is fine. Abdominal work is often included in Shiatsu, and full stomach is uncomfortable. Stay well hydrated.
What should I do after a Shiatsu session?
- Drink water generously — supports detoxification effects
- Rest if possible — allow therapeutic effects to settle
- Avoid intense exercise for several hours
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
- Notice changes in energy, sleep, digestion over next 24-72 hours
Can I have Shiatsu if I’m not flexible?
Yes — absolutely. Shiatsu adapts to your flexibility level. The therapist works within your comfortable range of motion. Stretching components can be modified or skipped. No prior flexibility required.
Is Shiatsu covered by insurance?
Generally not covered by standard UAE health insurance. Some employer wellness programs may include alternative therapy coverage. Check with your insurance provider and HR.
Is same-gender therapist available?
Yes, available on request — female clients can receive female therapists, male clients can receive male therapists.
